Robert G. Breur

Robert has a fascination with fine details and what they describe to him as like clues to the inner workings of his subjects and their motivations both physical and emotional in his art. He portrays his people in completeness as the living masterpieces he believes them to be from birth to maturity. He further describes in sculpture the intricate relationships they have had with their life experiences, their present surroundings and people in their lives from brief encounters to family members and life partners.

Robert uses wet clay as a completely free form material shapable directly with his hands to capture all that he can of what his subjects express to him and then finalizes each piece with a texture in clay or a hand rubbed finish to wood gain. He prefers to use a minimum of coatings to focus on solid inner material rather than cover and conceal it.

His work is both intricate in detail and graceful in pose, each with a singular all inclusive message portrayed from head to foot. Not only must his work be viewed from all sides but often must be touched to be fully appreciated and he encourages his viewers to do so.

Dale Callaway

A path full of artistic endeavors led Dale to eventually discover a love - and gift - for bird carving. Inspired by her love of being outside and seeing birds in their wild habitats, her 30-year carving career began in a family environment full of sculpture, poetry, architecture, knitting, engineering and designing.

Dale attended the Museum School in Boston before opening a silversmithing shop in Marblehead. She participated in several other businesses before discovering bird carving.

Her greatest pleasure comes from friends and family enjoying her creations. All her carvings are made of Maine White Cedar. When roughed out, the bird is cut in half and the inside hollowed out, much like a pumpkin. The halves are glued together and the real carving begins. The birds are finished with hand-mixed oil paints. "Time stops when I'm busy in my shop... so naturally the more I carve, the younger I'll stay!" exclaims Dale.

Frank Cannas

Frank Cannas was born in the Bronx in 1936 of Italian immigrants. His father was from the island of Sardinia and his mother from the Abruzzi region of Italy. Frank remembers at six years old when his father caught him drawing on the side of his mother's dresser with a straight pin. Instead of reprimanding him, he gave Frank a piece of paper and pencil and said "This is where you draw - not on the furniture."

Frank graduated from the school of Visual Arts' illustration program in 1958 and apprenticed with the Illustrators Group where he met Tony Kokinos, Roy Anderson and Guy Deel, among others. Frank built a storied career as a freelance illustrator producing illustrations for book covers, text books, ads, magazines and childrens books. He worked for publishers such as Dell Books, Holt Reinhart & Winston, Harcort Brace & world, Western Printing, McGrawHill, Rutledge Books, RC Gibson Co., and Random House.

Retired since 1996, Frank now paints for his own pleasure piein-aire or in his home studio. He has won over 20 awards in nationally juried exhibitions and he is also a member of the board of the Hudson valley Art association.

Jean Cronin Connolly

"In 2009 I made the move to Lake Sunapee in the beautiful town of New London, New Hampshire, where I have expanded my painting and photography studio, after a respite of several years. Before relocating, my home base was in the Boston area, where I pursued my painting and photography endeavors while at the same time being very involved with many other aspects of the arts, as chair of the Needham Cultural Council, the publisher of ArtsAround Boston magazine, the Director of Artsfirst and as the Artistic Director at Saint Joseph School in Needham, MA.

"My interests go beyond the Arts to community building. With my degrees in Education both in the general sciences, Art, and teaching the Hearing Impaired, as an entrepreneur, a photographer, and an artist, I have been involved with many grassroots efforts to create new experiences in the Arts with others while also achieving common goals for all who participate.

"My work has been exhibited in many juried exhibits and in private collections throughout the East Coast. Most recently I was juried into the Association for Visual Artists in Lebanon, NH and the Newfane Vermont Art Show both on display this summer 2011. My tranquil and beautiful surroundings in New Hampshire have inspired me to expand my creative pursuits to new galleries throughout New England."

Christian Dyer

A multimedia artist from the Northeastern seaboard, Christian Dyer primarily focuses on printmaking and sculpting, exploring themes of self and spirituality through highly replicable media. He is currently engaged in the creation of a body of prints that portray the inelegance of introspection. Concurrently, he is on a sculptural quest for the meaning of esoteric knowledge in a world of immediate information delivery.

During his education at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, he was selected for several juried academic exhibitions for his drawings, paintings, and sculptures. In this year alone, his oil painting and a composition of multiple bronze figures were selected in the LACFA annual Faculty-Selected Student Work exhibition. Christian has shown locally, specifically at the Hygienic Art Gallery in New London, Connecticut. Two of his prints were selected for the 2009 incarnation of their "Fourth Crossing" exhibit. Samantha Fanti

Samantha Fanti is influenced and amazed by everything around her. The beauty and the noises of the world inspire her art. "Movements and colors of the creatures of the ocean, along with the textures of nature and the sparkle of the sun on the water paint pictures in my mind. Along with the natural noises the world makes, I am also inspired heavily by pop culture, music and fashion." These juxtapositions of the world of pop culture and the oceanic world are what make compose her work.

Samantha has been creating and doodling since she was very young. She has always been drawn to nature and what it has to offer. "I would draw and paint whenever I could, even if it meant I had to draw on the walls. I drew every chance I had in elementary school, always winning small awards for my efforts. In high school, unfortunately we did not even have an art program, but during that time, I found Acorn Gallery in Marblehead, Massachusetts." There, she made friends fast and also a family for life. Her teachers at Acorn told her about Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts. Samantha focused on building her portfolio, gaining acceptance to LACFA. She spent four "amazing" years at LACFA and graduated in May of 2010 with a B.F.A in painting.

Christina Finch

Always interested in the arts growing up and now preferring three-dimensional media, Christina has recently discovered a love for exploring what can be done with clay. Her first 3D artworks as a kid were creatures made of rocks, shells, and chestnuts decorated with nail polish and googly eyes. Today, she still enjoys using the natural world for inspiration and strives to make intriguing yet often practically useful objects. Never forgetting what her elementary school art teacher said, "turn a mess up into a non-mess up," some of Christina's best ceramic works morph from an asymmetric bowl or simply a lump of clay with no finished piece in mind. Originally from Lexington, MA, she is currently a junior at Connecticut College where she is completing a major in behavioral neuroscience and minors in art and philosophy. Christina just returned from the fall semester abroad in Denmark and is excited to get back into the ceramics studio this semester. Christina can be contacted at christina.finch@conncoll.edu.

George Gati

I am an engineer by education and work experience. While I have always been interested in photography, it was digital photography and retirement that gave me the opportunity to pursue my chosen art. I have no formal education in photography. Self-education in the art is a constantly ongoing process in my life; going to see all photo exhibits within reach, read about photography, and study pictures. I have been writing photo exhibit reviews for a few years now and frequently judge contests at the club level.

I believe in being able to come up with good photographs no matter what the topic is. Social commentary, nature, incongruities, etc. Especially valued are pictures of a few elements; those scenes that most of us would walk by without even noticing. The world around us is a fascinating place. Depending on the particular scene and on the observer's interpretation it may be beautiful of ugly, peaceful or disturbing, unusual or commonplace, etc. It all depends on what we see and how we react to it. Quite often it is after I finish a picture that it reveals to me a deeper meaning and I realize what must have been in my subconscious when I took it.

Susan Jaworski-Stranc

I am a printmaker, specializing in the creation of linoleum block prints. After each successive printing of a color, the surface of the block is reduced while at the same time the printing surface is built up with multi-layered colors. Born from one block of linoleum, my relief prints have the nuance and rich textural surfaces of an oil painting.

Although Picasso coined this method of working, a "suicide print", I rather think of this printmaking process as emulating the journey of life. While creating my prints, I am never able to re-visit past stages. I can only proceed forward with the acceptance of all good and not so good choices which were mediated and acted upon with the hope and joy of completion.

Thomas P. Jennerwein

Tom has always been fascinated by the visual impact that comes from the works of the Masters; their paintings are magic. The Masters being, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Vermeer as well as David Leffel, a current living master, have all been an inspiration to the development of Tom's oil paintings.

"The power of the light in their paintings attracted me to paint in that style." Paintings show us objects in our environment that we may overlook or ignore, and I try to make some of that world around us come alive, as a rich, beautiful place. Paint strokes, along with a well thought palette would bring magic to the viewers, making them want to touch the illusion of a three dimensional object on canvas. Employed with a degree in nursing, he spends his off hours attending art classes, studying every book, video and painting he could find on the subject and began refining his own talents. At first, he painted and displayed watercolors for 18 years at local art centers and outdoor shows, winning awards and selling to both national and international collectors, as well as to a local wine merchant which later became a label on Stonington Vineyards' Cab Franc red wine. In 2005 after attending a portrait class in oil with Chris Zhang, he changed his media from watercolors for the classical approach of oil painting. Although Tom's style continues to change and grow, he paints primarily in a classical style reminiscent of the old masters.

Stanley Kolber

Stanley was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Brooklyn College and the Columbia University School of Law. After a few years of practice in the United States Justice Department in Washington D.C., he returned and took up a career in private law firm practice in New York City. Three events, close in time, propelled him some ten years ago to put down his lawyer briefcase, pick up his camera, and commit himself to photography as a full time artistic undertaking.

First, an artist with whom Stanley had been working to develop exhibits for an upcoming trial and who had seen some of his early work with birds and nature, encouraged him to devote more time to his art, and urged him to take it for evaluation to Ivan Karp at the OK Harris Gallery in New York. Second, arriving for work a bit later than usual, he watched as the Twin Towers, in which his office was located, came crashing to earth on 9/11. And then he took his work to Mr. Karp, who encouraged him to pursue what by then had become a serious goal, a life in art.

Shooting lots of film, experimenting, studying light and its changing qualities, making the transition to and mastering digital equipment, traveling with his wife who shared his passion for nature and wildlife to Africa (to which he returns this November ), Alaska, Patagonia and other distant places, and many of our national parks and wildlife refuges, his work matured and evolved, ranging from his birds to abstract images of natural forms in ice and water, to night scenes on the streets of New York in which he found new inspiration.

Daniel Mosher Long

Dan was born with eleven fingers sometime during the Cold War. He took up photography in high school because he liked the feel of small, dark places. He studied photography at Bennington College, Rhode Island School of Design and Purdue University. Curiously, all his former professors are now dead or missing.

In the 80's he was mostly a student, but also worked wherever background checks were lax. He had paying gigs at Brown University and all of his aforementioned alma maters. In the 90's he gave up photography. He got married and made babies, lived in and renovated an 1860 one-room schoolhouse, and studied to become a college Big Wig (MA/higher ed. UCONN). He spent most of the 90's as a college administrator. His camera grew moldy.

Despite the obvious risks associated with the occupation, Dan is now an associate professor of photography at Manchester Community College in Connecticut. He is the recipient of a number of awards, some for photography, including a 2006 Connecticut Artist Fellowship. He lives with his photographer/professor wife and children in Connecticut's rural Quiet Corner.

Christopher Martin

"Before I started at Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, I had no idea what being a dedicated artist meant. Being a young college freshman I believed that the doodles in my sketch books were 'art'. As I grew and watched three senior classes graduate and create work for a show to display their talents, I realized art isn't just my sketch book, it isn't my final product, but it's my drive to want to expand and create. Through the four years spent struggling to find my artistic voice, I realized it will not happen if forced. Discovering one's self through making a "mess", so to speak, sets this person up for overall success." At the end of this journey, Christopher Martin received a BFA in painting at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts and created a self that is more aware of how not just to learn from his elders, but to learn from his own mistakes.

Lizbeth McGee

It was as a teenager that McGee first saw a Carolyn Blish painting and realized that the light and shadows of Blish's work spoke to her soul. "It was then that I knew watercolor was my language," beams McGee. "My passion was born and the journey began."

Graduating from Rochester Institute of Technology with a degree in Textile Design, and years of freelancing in New York City, gave McGee the experience needed in wall covering and fabric design to publish her own book. It was only after she moved to Mystic that she was truly able to concentrate on her gift of watercolor artistry.

Life, in the form of a husband, two boys and a career as a retail store gift buyer, has taken some time away from her artistic passion, but it hasn't diminished it in any way. McGee is thrilled to "take up the brush again."

Linda Orlomoski

"As a 911 Emergency Medical Dispatcher, it's important to have a hobby that helps to relieve stress and is about as far away from emergencies and the 'bad' side of life as possible. For me, photography is that hobby.

"My initial joy of photography began when I was much younger back in the mid-to-late 1970s but it took a backseat to raising children and "real life" and it wasn't until I started writing a blog on a regular basis that I rediscovered my love of taking pictures. Photos are a great way to help "tell the story" though lately I've found that my photos make up more of the story than words do.

"My true photographic passion lies in landscapes - especially seascapes that include lighthouses and other places of a historic nature including covered bridges, monuments, old cemeteries, and interesting architecture. I am not overly keen on major photo manipulation via Photoshop and the like so I would say that probably makes me more of a traditionalist."

Dan Patrick

Master carver, architect and North Stonington resident Dan Patrick originally began to explore his artistic gift in pen, ink and pencil drawings. Since 1990, though, he has primarily focused on bird and fish sculpture in wood. Additionally, many of his lifelike creations are painted with oil and acrylics to further enhance their intricate beauty. "Quality wood and paints, along with pose and attitude of subject, combine with the artist's creative vision to transmit a feel for nature's beauty," states Dan's biography.

Dan's works have garnered many first-place and best-in-show accolades. Much of his work is commissioned and can be found in collections across the United States and internationally. One recognizable piece is his life-size Red-Tailed Hawk in Eastern Connecticut State University's library in Willimantic, Connecticut.

Barbara Shriver

Barbara, a current resident of Old Lyme, Connecticut, is pleased to display her collection of shore bird profiles decorated for the holiday season.

She began woodworking at her family farm in Pennsylvania when she wasn't managing a 35-cow/calf operation. Starting as a hobby making shore birds as gifts, Barbara's passion evolved into decorating stick-up goose decoys for visitors and local art shows. Over the years, after much international travel, she continually returns to her craft. She currently creates these bird profiles out of her Old Lyme studio using her original templates, local driftwood and treasures from the surrounding woods and shoreline.

Gerard Smith

A native of the Connecticut Shoreline, Smith has over 70 years of life experience to inspire his art. "The birds and the people around me are all part of me and my work," states Smith. Three decades of nature walks throughout the Northeast have soaked into his psyche and can be seen in his sketches and paintings.

Especially drawn to birds of prey, Smith's representations of birds have been compared to those of Roger Tory Peterson. Additionally, his larger, sweeping pieces at first glance seem to be concerned with only a primary subject (such as a huge granite ledge, imposing piece of driftwood or old majestic oak); but a closer look reveals an attention to detail that might easily be overlooked. One review said it best, "Smith's creations often appear only as subtle elements in a grand symphonic composition."

His works appear in private collections throughout the US and Europe, including those of many celebrities, dignitaries and corporations.

Stacie Turner

"Childhood fascinates me, which is good since I get to watch it unfold daily around me. Children devour their world with intensity; that rock, that flower, getting into that ball game, playing with that girl – these are utterly all consuming and important. It's a terrifying world, from an adult perspective, because without perspective everything is both fascinating and overwhelming. Most adults recognize this when they'll say, laughing, you couldn't pay them enough to relive middle school. My interest in the Maine coastal area springs from my own childhood, as that is where I grew up and the rocks and trees and waters there were the backdrop for my own youth.

Russell Vujs

A 1991 honors graduate of the Connecticut Institute of Art with a concentration in commercial art, Vujs began to rely on his passion for oil painting when he wasn't able to find work in his field of study. He is a member of the ASME and has a firm conviction that plein air painting has a huge impact on the refinements he is able to make to scenes back in the studio. "The greatest education on painting I get are the hours I spend in the field with my easel observing and recording the natural world."

In addition to his years of painting the scenes around him, Vujs has created a series of videos on watercolor painting, pen and ink drawing and airbrush painting that are found in middle school, high school and college libraries throughout the United States. Likewise, he has taught a wide variety of classes and workshops for many art societies.

Jacqueline White

"My oils are done primarily on location wherever my travels take me and are an expression of mood and emotion manifested through the beauty of the landscape. A deep desire to partake in a dialogue with nature and a quest to infuse a moment of truth within the canvas is why I paint. This spontaneous process invigorates the work and is imbued with the spirit of nature as it is created in communion with the wind and sunlight itself.

"Each painting has its own life. I strive not to duplicate nature but to engage in a poetic exchange with it through humility of spirit. By heeding to it, I ultimately strive to share with the viewer the joy that I feel by capturing the presence of nature's truth."

Justin Wirtalla

On his coastal photography, Justin states: "Shot during the first and last hour of the day, this work explores the constant fluid motion of the coastal environment. Exposures are measured by minutes, allowing the sea and sky to separate man made objects from natural elements. The continuously changing colors and tones blend together creating a surreal, unrecognizable world. The image is reduced to its most minimal form during each accumulating minute. As a result, an entire extended period of time is experienced in one instant."
