Come find your love of the sea

The Gallery at Firehouse Square is an ever-changing collection of unique maritime art from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, we also have regular shows of emerging and established artists who have an abiding love of the sea.


Our goal is make such art accessible to young and old, including students, residents, tourists, boaters, collectors and more. Our unique collection ranges from classic to modern to whimsical, and we have pieces you won't find anywhere else. We even have a nautical library you can browse.

Meet proprietor John S. Johnson 

The Gallery at Firehouse Square is the vision of John S. Johnson, a man who spent a lifetime on or near the sea. A native of Mamaroneck, New York, John has lived for over 40 years in Connecticut. A graduate of Tufts University with a B.A. in Economics, he started his professional life in the international banking world. John soon gravitated to a family marine hardware business and ultimately became a founding partner of Brewer Yacht Yards in Mamaroneck, NY. 


A born entrepreneur, John’s long list has a common underlying element: the coastal waters. His current businesses include the Gallery at Firehouse Square and Thames River Properties, New London; the Allen Spool Mill Building, Mystic; Newport Marine Products; JBG Ventures, Stonington CT and USA Ltd. Partnership, Norwalk CT.

John’s civic responsibilities are numerous: Chairman OpSail Connecticut;  Founding Board Member, National Coast Guard Museum Association; Port Authority Commissioner –State of Connecticut; Chairman of Legislative Affairs, CT Marine Trades Association; and Vice Chair of the New London Port Authority.
